Doug Stephens follows up his seminal work, The Retail Revival, with a brilliantly researched and well-articulated view on the vastly changing retail landscape. Rather than hypothesize about what retail might look like in five or ten years, Stephens draws on current examples to inform his perspective. He points to the ever-growing nature of AI to redefine the retail experience and lays out a case as to how retail is being influenced by forces not traditionally of the sector. For instance, he shows how Amazon's obsession with new technology and innovation is and will continue to influence bricks and mortar developments by both putting many retailers out of business, even as it drives others to greater levels of innovation and relevance. If you are serious about retail this is a must-read. Peter Smith, Author, Hiring Squirrels and Sell Something

Mildly terrifying and completely exhilarating, this is a must read for anyone contemplating the future of retail or looking to make radical improvements in their business right now. Tools, tactics, and strategies abound in this hard to put down book. Whether you own brick and mortar stores or an ecommerce site, Re Engineering Retail offers valuable insight, deeper understanding of customer behavior and motivation, and digital trends. Well worth the time.

As a person who has spent well over thirty years in retail technology I have seen and experienced all of what Doug lays out in this book. I do agree that the time has come for a changing of the guard in retail. It is a wonderful time if you can reflect and be an active participant and not a deer in the headlights.

If you are a retailer big/small/brick & mortar/online you need to read this book. The future is certainly unknown but this book will get you thinking in the right direction.

A field guide into the retail revolution that effects us all. And, an educated look into the future of the retail experience. Jaunty writing and solid research. I’ll be recommending often

Doug is an old school retailer helping you steer through new retail, ecommerce, DTC, Amazon and the emerging state of play.

Doug Stephens is incredibly insightful, with a great vision. I was inspired and motivated to think about retail in a different manner!

Doug is by far my favorite futurist author. What I love the most is the back and forth from how we got to "x" point to where we are going in the future. We can see things in his book being implemented into the market almost in real time.

The Louder Song: Listening for Hope in the Midst of Lament, by Aubrey Sampson

Review

I’m celebrating this book on lament. Don’t we all need better ways of grieving? Don’t we need a better understanding of suffering? Aubrey dives deep into the Scriptures and returns with a biblical map and a voice I shall return to again and again. (Leslie Leyland Fields, author of Crossing the Waters: Following Jesus through the Storms, the Fish, the Doubt, and the Seas)If you are in the middle of deep hurt, The Louder Song is a powerful reminder of how God meets us in the middle of our pain and reminds us we have victory through him. Aubrey’s story is a personal lesson in how to pass through disappointment and pain without getting stuck there. (Christine Caine, bestselling author and founder of The A21 Campaign and Propel Women)Aubrey Sampson is a fresh voice when your broken heart needs a fresh wind. Lean into these pages and you’ll hear the beauty of the Louder Song―that your soul is desperately longing to hear. (Ann Voskamp, NYT bestselling author of The Broken Way)There’s no denying we live in a fallen, broken, and sinful world―a world of pain―where suffering is a reality for all of us at various levels. Aubrey Sampson peels away the layers of pretense that often masquerade as outward strength or valor as she unpacks an expressive theology of lament. Anchored by her own faith journey and experience of personal loss and suffering, Aubrey encourages authenticity and fosters hope for those who are in the midst of pain and suffering. I am confident this book will be of great encouragement to you as you reflect on the experiences of lament in a world of suffering. (Ed Stetzer, PhD, executive director of the Billy Graham Center)If you want permission to ask God the hard questions about suffering, Sampson extends an embossed invitation. Here she offers a highly accessible tour of the lost art of biblical lament, teaching along the way with utmost pastoral care―and with just enough vulnerability to persuade hurting readers that their guide is trustworthy. One certain outcome: You will never look at snow globes the same way again. (Andy Olsen, managing editor of Christianity Today)In this vulnerable account of her own pain, Aubrey Sampson helps us believe that life can be hard . . . and God can still be good. Anchored in Scripture and enlivened by storytelling, this powerful book makes something lyrical of lament. And I suppose this, too, is a mystery―that the most beautiful songs are often born out of suffering. The Louder Song will be a pleasure to recommend and reread. (Jen Michel, author of Surprised by Paradox)This is a beautiful book. It is real about lament and honest about suffering, but not without hope. With reflections on lament that are both deeply personal and guided by Scripture, The Louder Song composes a harmonious tune that will be restorative music to the ears of anyone who has felt isolated, unknown, or hopeless in their pain. Emily Dickinson once wrote, “‘Hope’ is the thing with feathers― / That perches in the soul― / And sings the tune without the words― / And never stops―at all―.” The buoyancy of enduring, Christ-filled, soul-stirring hope, even in the midst of pain, comes through in Aubrey Sampson’s transparent and evocative writing. This is a song you’ll want to put on repeat. (Brett McCracken, senior editor at The Gospel Coalition)The Louder Song: Listening for Hope in the Midst of Lament is a rare book written with honest, raw emotion about experiencing life’s most challenging times. Aubrey Sampson uses stories from her life and Scripture to remind us it’s okay to cry out to God when we don’t understand. If you’re going through a challenging time right now or trying to help someone who is, this book is for you! (Dave Ferguson, lead pastor at Community Christian Church)Having walked through suffering in my own life and with others, I know how tempting it can be to skip right past the hard stuff―and how much we miss out on if we do. In this book, Aubrey Sampson perfectly articulates the beauty of lament and offers it as a gift to anyone who has ever cried out to God―and to the church―in their pain. Through her own story and keen insights, she helps readers learn how to walk through grief while remaining anchored in hope. (Jamie D. Aten, PhD, founder and executive director of the Humanitarian Disaster Institute at Wheaton College)If you have ever felt the weight of pain pulling hard at your body and soul―and I know you have―there is solace in these pages. Aubrey teaches us not to hide from pain but to look it in the face, hard and long, and lament . . . and, in the depth of this hard, honest song, to find the Louder Song―the presence of the Comforter. (Catherine McNiel, author of Long Days of Small Things)A book written from the mind reaches a mind; a book written from the heart reaches a heart; and a book written from a life reaches a life. This book is a life reacher. Aubrey invites us to hold the suffering of life and the sovereignty of God together with both hands. (Tricia Lott Williford, author of And Life Comes Back and You Can Do This)What does a person who believes in a good and powerful God do with unimaginable pain . . . and seemingly stone-cold silence from heaven? Aubrey Sampson, from Scripture and experience, says we must lament. Not to find answers, but to “be still in the unanswerable.” Not to force God’s hand, but to be intimately “tethered to his presence.” The Louder Song gives hope that in the midst of life-shattering wounds, God sees us and invites us to cry out―raw and real―to him. In response, he comes close, walking with us through our pain, until the day when pain is no more. A must-read! (Kevin Butcher, author of Choose and Choose Again: The Brave Act of Returning to God's Love)

From the Back Cover

God sings a louder songIn the midst of suffering, you want answers for the unanswerable, resolutions to the unresolvable. But pain is a chasm of the unknown. In one breath, you may be able to say with confidence that God’s got this. In the next, you might descend into disbelief and despair, where you are raw before God, an open wound.Whether you are dealing with grief, spiritual doubt, chronic pain, or a difficult season of life, there is a pathway through this suffering: lament. Lament minds the gap between current hopelessness and coming hope. Lament anticipates new creation but acknowledges the painful reality of now. It recognizes the existence of evil and suffering―without any sugarcoating―while simultaneously declaring that suffering will not have the final say.In the midst of your darkest times, let Aubrey Sampson help you discover that lament leads you back to a place of hope―because God sings a song of renewal and restoration within your pain. And he sings a louder song than suffering ever could.

A teacher told me once that the most profound prayer you can utter is, "God, I really don't want to talk to you right now." The Louder Song is that prayer, in book form.Sampson's writing is especially refreshing because of her raw honesty, vulnerability, and because she really doesn't pretend to be the expert... she's done her research but is still totally approachable. The idea of lament might also call to mind the idea of a somber march, but this book is more like a waltz, weaving together many stories about many different kinds of lament, along with thoughtful exegesis and perfectly chosen scripture. In fact, every chapter in this book is even better than the one before, which builds to—appropriately enough—a great crescendo as Sampson concludes with recommendations for corporate lament. Highly recommend.

This book is an amazing tool for those of us who feel like we're floating in grief and darkness and don't know how God fits with any of it. Aubrey offers her own story as an invitation to us to attend to our pain with God. She points to lamentation as a resource to help us face grief and loss with God, and gives us a taste of the hope that flowers from even the emptiest places.

This book will be refreshing for your soul and strength to your bones, especially in the midst of or after a season of grief. It will also help you to learn to talk again with God in seasons where words are not enough. And it will point you to Jesus who is our hope. Read it. Your life and faith will be better for it. And buy an extra copy to give to a friend who needs some encouragement.

This is a really important book on learning how to cry out to God when it seems He’s not listening, when facing pain or dealing with all the difficult things we go through in life. I’m learning so much and it is incredibly well written!

I highly recommend this book, especially to all Christ followers. It is eye opening and comforting. Part of the human experience is grief, suffering, sadness, disappointment, etc. and sometimes we don’t know how to reconcile all that with the good God we love and serve. Sampson teaches us about “lament”, possibly a forgotten word in our vocabularies.Through Sampson’s own experiences and what Jesus has taught her, she can speak into our lives with raw emotion and honesty. She gently shares what she has learned so that we too may find hope and joy not just at the end of our journey but along our crazy path as well. She validates our questions and our fears. She gives us permission to cry, to complain, to be mad at God--to lament. God is not afraid of lament so we should not be either. There are more lament prayers than praise prayers in the Bible. “Lament, above all, is a dialogue between us and God, and he has given us a beautiful picture of what that looks like throughout Scripture.”As one may express grief in various ways, lament also emerges “through a variety of mediums and expressions”. Sampson goes into more detail about four types of lament. She helps us handle our pain, anger, disbelief, fear, disappointment, and sadness, by guiding us in our thoughts and prayers. “Lament is the art of trusting God no matter what he gives, no matter what he takes.”After you read this book for yourself, I suggest buying it as a gift for those in your life who are struggling or questioning or need help navigating grief, suffering, or disappointment. The last 30 pages of the book is a chapter by chapter study guide that you can use on your own for reflection and journaling or use it with others in a small group.A copy of this book was provided by the publisher for review.

In her new book The Louder Song, Audrey Sampson, shares how she learned to take her pains and sufferings and turn them into laments. With incredible vulnerability, Sampson lets you into the hard places she’s experienced in life. And sje shares how she has learned to relate to God in those places.Sampson walks the reader through an understanding of what a lament is. A cry to God that lets you tell him exactly what you are feeling. And she shares examples of how to share your laments through the different heart aches and pains of life.Breathe LifeThe Louder Song felt like a breath of fresh air to my soul. As I’ve been going through my own significant struggles, this book gave me permission to be where I am. But not to keep that pain self-focused – to turn those thoughts and emotions back to God. And to let him weave a bigger song over the one I had been singing myself.Sampson points out: “Lament is the art of trusting God no matter what he gives, no matter what he takes.”Through turning to God during the hard times with our honest feelings and emotions, we learn to trust what he gives. And we learn to trust what he takes. This book is a must for anyone going through any kind of struggles.I received a copy of this book from the publisher. This review is my own, honest opinion.

"The Louder Song" is such an inspiring read! Seriously, this is a must-read or at least a must-have for everyone, as at some point in your life you will have a time that feels like there is no hope and you are questioning why you are having to deal with what is going on. This book will help you to rely on God and remember that He is in control and He will help you to get past the suffering. Aubrey shares her own story as well as others whom she knows and also stories from the Bible that all revolve around each of their laments. We all have plans for how life is going to go, but we all know that life does not always follow that plan, there are twists and turns and those changes, those hard times are when the struggle happens and that is when we need to lament. I loved how Aubrey presented this and working through the examples to really illustrate this concept. This book is eye-opening, inspiring and one that I will refer to often when I need the reminder and encouragement.*Thanks to the Tyndale Blog Network for the complimentary copy of this book.*
