Carried Forward By Hope, Book 6 of The Bregdan Chronicles series, by Ginny Dye begins with the ending of the Civil war in America and the soldiers returning home to find their families. It is the year 1865. After the war ended the beloved President Lincoln freed the slaves in the south and had great plans to move the country forward. Unfortunately the great president was assassinated and suddenly the people acquired a new president to take his place. It didn't take long before the people realized this president didn't have the same ideals as their past leader and the country would have a difficult time in trying to heal. Ginny Dye is a great historian and story teller. I love her characters in this book. I feel like a part of their family and want them to thrive and achieve their goals of reconstructing their lives and help the freedmen and people of the south that were defeated after the war. I have learned how people must have felt going through the hard times of despair and pain, mentally, as well as physically. This is a story of people, men and women, black and white, northerners and southerners. This was a time when freedmen wanted their rights and women wanted to vote and the haters of course making this virtually impossible. Love, passion, romance, hate, despair, cruelty and happiness will rip through you while reading this wonderfully written book. I suggest you get a copy of the first books in this series. I am looking forward to book #7 (Glimmers of Change)!
I have just finished reading this, the 6th book in the Bregdan Chronicles and I have one word to describe the whole sage...MAGNIFICENT!! I am a big fan of books from the Civil War Era and this saga is without a doubt the BEST account I have ever read of that period of time. All of the characters are developed so colorfully and realistically that I have become very attached to them. As we all know, it was a time of great upheaval in our country, and these people live this upheaval every day of their lives. It was a dangerous time as well. The horror of the war is not downplayed one bit in these books...I would have been very disappointed if it was. Carrie Cromwell began life on a thriving plantation outside of Richmond, Va. before the war She loved life on the plantation and also loved many of the slaves her father owned. But Carrie began to doubt the moral issue of 'owning' another person and she struggled with that until God showed her truth. From that time on, she became a different person. Follow along with Carrie as her life takes twists and and turns she never could have imagined during those carefree days on the plantation. She becomes a nurse and helps out in a military hospital during the war...tending horrific wounds and struggling to help dying men. She wishes more than anything to be a doctor...but can she become a real doctor in a time when women just didn't go into that profession that was dominated by men? Ginny Dye is a genius! I can only imagine the hours and hours of research she put into these books. Her dedication shows through each one. I cannot WAIT for book #7!
Not too sure about continuing this series. The first five books were good but this last one, book six; about 4-5 chapters of storyline and 31-32 chapters of moral epiphanies and general proselytizing. After awhile I caught myself skipping over entire paragraphs dwelling on "how wise mama had been", " "bloom where you're planted" & "this is where I'm meant to be now" etc. Every female in series is beautiful, strong, caring and intelligent; every man not only survived Civil War but is handsome, strong, totally accepting of his unconventional Southern woman, brave, true etc, etc. All this AND both the plantations and the Richmond townhouse also survive the war!!!!
I am truly enjoying the series. I have really loved the character development and relationships among them. So sad that favorite characters are gone though. Some things bother me thus only four stars. If Carrie is such an abolitionist, why aren't the kitchen and house slaves allowed to eat at the table with them after the war? How can Carrie love a man that killed a child at one point? And why oh why does Carrie have tears in her eyes in every chapter? That gets old really quick and loses meaning. As one reviewer stated, "does she have allergies or something." So true. Last but not least WHO is feeding all these people she brings home? Her father who lost his fortune? It just seems to me that the author lost perspective here. Someone has to provide all that and although they had gardens it takes a heap of green beans to fill a person up. No one seems to have an income in this lot except her father who has little left after the war. So although I appreciate the author's historica . facts up to this point a good portion of the story seems implausible. .
It was so good to finally reach the end of the Civil War. I thought I could breathe easier but just because the War was over didn’t mean that hostility ceased. Hatred doesn’t end when war ends, unfortunately. What hit me hardest was the sinking of the steamer, Sultana, which carried many of the newly released Union POWs to their death when they were suppose to be going home. What a tragedy! But there are happy times as well with Janie’s escape from an abusive spouse to the decision of Janie & Carrie to enter medical school and the birth of the Samuels baby girl. I’m looking forward to the next book to continue on this journey with these characters Ginny has created that have become my friends.
