I don't know of any other book that fits so well in that gap, and I've looked. It's completely approachable if you have no bond knowledge, but it goes deep enough into investment strategy to be helpful.When I moved from being a stock broker to a bond broker my boss recommended I start with reading this book in addition to the in house training. I already had a financial background and understood all of the bonds 101 information. This book quickly got me up to speed on the bond market and various trading strategies.While a good portion of the book is preaching the all bond portfolio, you don't have to buy into that belief to get an extreme value from this book. It is definitely worth the money. I highly recommend it.

This is the best book on bonds I've found so far. The authors clearly are deep believers in the power of predictable payments from bonds. If you want the most bullet proof portfolio possible to avoid losses of any kind, then this book will show you how to build it.Although I'm not sold on the need to make an all bond portfolio, that doesn't mean I can't use the techniques in here to build the bond portion of my account. It seems to gloss over the price of inflation in their case studies section. It's fine and dandy to show a 1,000,000 portfolio making 5% in bonds for the next 15 years till maturity, but when you take 2% inflation into account then you're really only able to spend 3% a year, or 30k off of a $1mil account or lose purchasing power every year. I think that's overly conservative.Use this book to figure out how to make a bond ladder to plan out your next 5-7 years of withdrawals from your retirement account. then let the rest run in S&P index funds so you don't need to have any fear of how you'll pay your bills if we encounter a stock market correction and you'll be all set.

I wanted to learn more about bonds (I only had a basic knowledge), so I bought this book. It delivered: It gave me a good overview of bonds, and certainly piqued my interest to learn more.In short, it is a good intro book on bonds, and if you want to learn about this area, this book will deliver.Some points:- You will learn a LOT about bonds -- perhaps more than you may even want to know. But it's largely readable.- I would like to see it updated to 2011, post the financial crisis. It was last updated in 2007, so I would be curious if the authors had anything more to add after the debacle, and given the fact that interest rates are currently practically non-existent.- Some of the sentence structure was confusing. I am literate, but sometimes I found myself scratching my head. So if you find yourself in the same position occasionally, you are not alone. It's not a major problem, however.- This book is built around the premise of a "100% bond portfolio". This is not necessarily a bad position for the lazy investor. However, there are arguments in favor of equities, especially around investing in equity funds using some basic market timing methods (as outlined, for example, in All About Market Timing, Second Edition (All About Series). Perhaps the answer is somewhere in the middle. I really don't know, as I'm still learning myself. It's worth noting that you can still ignore the "100% bond" argument and get a lot out of this book.- Their explanations of bond funds (which the authors seem to dislike) are a bit confusing -- sometimes recommending them, other times not.- I suppose it would have been nice if they'd simply given a straightforward prescription of what to buy and not buy. Yes, that's pretty lazy, but in the bond market, the breadth of choices is staggering (no exaggeration) and to just have a simple guideline would have been appreciated. At some point, the investor can get more sophisticated, but right now, I am still a bit dizzy about the choices of agency bonds vs. treasuries vs. general obligation muni bonds vs. school bonds vs. revenue muni bonds vs. corporate bonds vs. UITs, ETFs, open-ended bond funds, stable value funds, etc., etc. (you get the picture).In summary, if you want a good overview of bonds, this book will do it. I'm sure there are other books which do an equal or better job, but if you're tired of reading reviews on Amazon.com to find what is a good introductory bond book to buy, then just click Buy and get this one.

It is the year 1865. After the war ended the beloved President Lincoln freed the slaves in the south and had great plans to move the country forward. Unfortunately the great president was assassinated and suddenly the people acquired a new president to take his place. It didn't take long before the people realized this president didn't have the same ideals as their past leader and the country would have a difficult time in trying to heal. Ginny Dye is a great historian and story teller. I love her characters in this book. I feel like a part of their family and want them to thrive and achieve their goals of reconstructing their lives and help the freedmen and people of the south that were defeated after the war. I have learned how people must have felt going through the hard times of despair and pain, mentally, as well as physically. This is a story of people, men and women, black and white, northerners and southerners. This was a time when freedmen wanted their rights and women wanted to vote and the haters of course making this virtually impossible. Love, passion, romance, hate, despair, cruelty and happiness will rip through you while reading this wonderfully written book. I suggest you get a copy of the first books in this series. I am looking forward to book #7 (Glimmers of Change)!

I have just finished reading this, the 6th book in the Bregdan Chronicles and I have one word to describe the whole sage...MAGNIFICENT!! I am a big fan of books from the Civil War Era and this saga is without a doubt the BEST account I have ever read of that period of time. All of the characters are developed so colorfully and realistically that I have become very attached to them. As we all know, it was a time of great upheaval in our country, and these people live this upheaval every day of their lives. It was a dangerous time as well. The horror of the war is not downplayed one bit in these books...I would have been very disappointed if it was. Carrie Cromwell began life on a thriving plantation outside of Richmond, Va. before the war She loved life on the plantation and also loved many of the slaves her father owned. But Carrie began to doubt the moral issue of 'owning' another person and she struggled with that until God showed her truth. From that time on, she became a different person. Follow along with Carrie as her life takes twists and and turns she never could have imagined during those carefree days on the plantation. She becomes a nurse and helps out in a military hospital during the war...tending horrific wounds and struggling to help dying men. She wishes more than anything to be a doctor...but can she become a real doctor in a time when women just didn't go into that profession that was dominated by men? Ginny Dye is a genius! I can only imagine the hours and hours of research she put into these books. Her dedication shows through each one. I cannot WAIT for book #7!

Not too sure about continuing this series. The first five books were good but this last one, book six; about 4-5 chapters of storyline and 31-32 chapters of moral epiphanies and general proselytizing. After awhile I caught myself skipping over entire paragraphs dwelling on "how wise mama had been", " "bloom where you're planted" & "this is where I'm meant to be now" etc. Every female in series is beautiful, strong, caring and intelligent; every man not only survived Civil War but is handsome, strong, totally accepting of his unconventional Southern woman, brave, true etc, etc. All this AND both the plantations and the Richmond townhouse also survive the war!!!!

I am truly enjoying the series. I have really loved the character development and relationships among them. So sad that favorite characters are gone though. Some things bother me thus only four stars. If Carrie is such an abolitionist, why aren't the kitchen and house slaves allowed to eat at the table with them after the war? How can Carrie love a man that killed a child at one point? And why oh why does Carrie have tears in her eyes in every chapter? That gets old really quick and loses meaning. As one reviewer stated, "does she have allergies or something." So true. Last but not least WHO is feeding all these people she brings home? Her father who lost his fortune? It just seems to me that the author lost perspective here. Someone has to provide all that and although they had gardens it takes a heap of green beans to fill a person up. No one seems to have an income in this lot except her father who has little left after the war. So although I appreciate the author's historica . facts up to this point a good portion of the story seems implausible. .

It was so good to finally reach the end of the Civil War. I thought I could breathe easier but just because the War was over didn’t mean that hostility ceased. Hatred doesn’t end when war ends, unfortunately. What hit me hardest was the sinking of the steamer, Sultana, which carried many of the newly released Union POWs to their death when they were suppose to be going home. What a tragedy! But there are happy times as well with Janie’s escape from an abusive spouse to the decision of Janie & Carrie to enter medical school and the birth of the Samuels baby girl. I’m looking forward to the next book to continue on this journey with these characters Ginny has created that have become my friends.

This book is extremely well written, and if the reader carefully follows Ms. Lonning's instructions, which are accompanied by wonderful color photos, he or she can also produce lovely baskets like these. Some of Lonning's baskets sell for thousands of dollars and yet she generously explains how we can make them as well. In the book she also gives info on where to purchase the requisite materials. If you are unfamiliar with her exquisite baskets, her website, [...], has a gallery of her work along with their prices.Following her basket-making instructions are "bio-sketches" of 23 artists along with photos of their work. Some of the artists also detail how their baskets are constructed in case the reader also wants to try making them.I highly, highly recommend this wonderful book.

If this review were being written for a tabloid publication, I might title it "Kari Lonning Reveals All"; all, that is, of the unique techniques that she uses to create the signature wicker baskets by which she is recognized world-wide.Most basketry books, written by well-known artists, give very good basic techniques but stop short of giving instructions in the way the work was made to be distinctive. Not so with The Art of Basketry.Beginning with the basics, she soon follows with clearly written instructions, illustrated with color photograph step-by-step sequences of her distinctive styles: her double wall cone shaped pieces, her "hairy" baskets, her grid bases and her beautiful color patterning. For example, her spiral patterns look very different from the wicker spirals I have been taught. How does she do it? By using 4,5, even 6 rod waling- that's how.All illustrations are done with color photographs, not diagrams. Many full color photographs of her work are included.The remainder of the book explores the work of 23 other recognized baskets artists such as Leon Niehues, Dona Look and the McColleys. They each give their artist's statement, their motivation, and some "hints" at how their items are created. Again full color photographs of their work make each page interesting and beautiful.This book is a "must have" for anyone wanting to expand their wicker basketry skill to "beyond the ordinary". It is also for anyone interested in a collection of photographs of artistic baskets and for anyone who works with design through color combinations.I would highly recommend it.

How can you go wrong with anything done by Kari Lonning? Her book is just as clean and beautifully designed as her baskets! If only she'd have a class in New Haven CT!

This arrived very securely wrap and in very good condition. Our basket group is currently using it to learn this type of of basketry. Lots of pictures and good instructions .
