He does all of this with the help of a hardworking, well-traveled staff of 100 at Rick Steves' Europe in Edmonds, Washington, near Seattle. When not on the road, Rick is active in his church and with advocacy groups focused on economic justice, drug policy reform, and ending hunger. We have used the Rick Steves guidebooks for traveling in Europe, and they have all been excellent. As usual, in the guide to Amsterdam and the Netherlands there are very good sections on transportation, dining, where to stay, and what to see (and when). It is clearly written and has good maps. The restaurant suggestions were spot on, along with tips about canal tours and museums and of course hsi walking tours. Really, it is such a help to have these guidebooks, I can't imagine going without having them.To update it a bit, be careful about reliability of the transportation network in Belgium. What should be easy often isn't, the schedules are really more like guidelines. Or as one Dutch person said to us when we finally crossed into the Netherlands by train, now things will work. They did.
Touring The Netherlands with Rick as a guide is great. We organize our trip following his instructions and we never regret it.Even we follow the recommendations of "Uncle Rick" ( this is how we call him) to chose restaurants , because food is not the best Holland has to offer. We would have been lost chosing Indonesian food if it were not for his clear explanations and translationsWe stayed five night in Amsterdam and four in Delft, as we recommends, and we enjoyed every minute of it. Delft is a place out of a Cinderella story!
I find the Rick Steves guidebooks enormously helpful both in trip planning and while actually in the locale. He gives great tips on how to avoid long lines and how to navigate via rail and bus. His city walk narratives are interesting and informative. And he emphasizes local businesses and budget travel, which I love. He has a heavy focus on art so if that’s not your thing you can skim those sections. I usually consult two or three guides for a broad picture but always come back to the Steves books for details. I highly recommend all his guides and this one lived up to my expectations.
I love Rick Steves' books. I also have his books on Germany and France. I like travel books that give you GUIDANCE, and his books do just that. This book and my other Steves books give you an idea of what to visit based on how much time you have, which is great if you don't have time to do a lot of research. They help you prioritize. This book and the others recommend self-guided walking tours and also list popular guided tours. But if you want to do the research, the books get you started on that, giving you the pluses and minuses of each attraction. I don't like books that just describe all the attractions and hotels like some other travel books do -- I want guidance and insights. The Steves books also contain useful tidbits you need to know as a traveler, like if the train stations have lockers. Very practical stuff. The language is casual and personal, as if one helpful person wrote all the books. I confess I haven't gone on the trip yet. Hopefully the books are accurate and not "fake news"!
I bought this for my Kindle. So I'm reviewing it as a Kindle guide. I actually found it pretty helpful. Steves has a lot of helpful advice that gives you a real sense of how to negotiate some of the practicalities of France. For example, he had good information about the airport that was helpful to me as I tried to figure out my departure. I had a hotel recommendation, so I didn't use that part of his guide and I ended up eating a lot with friends. However he had great recommendations about bus routes and the metro. He also had great shopping recommendations, including several reminders that the stores in Paris are closed on Sunday. Easy for an American to forget that. The museum information was strong as well. I really liked some of the history he included and loved reading the backgrounds on buildings and parks. He also gives really good advice about the things worth doing and the things you could skip.Overall I had recourse to his book several times on my Kindle, often on the fly, and I found it easy to search and browse on my Kindle. Trust me, that is not always the case. I had another guide that I stopped even trying to use. Glad I bought this book, it came in handy on many occasions. I would definitely purchase another of his guides in future to visit another city or country.
What can I say? I’ve used other travel guides before, (primarily for trips to the UK), but for the last 4 years, have stayed with Rick’s books for trips to Italy, Germany, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Austria, Spain and France, and this year, The Netherlands and Belgium. I love that he gives you priority suggestions, “things to see if you have this amount of time, or that amount of timeâ€, in a place, walking tours, should you want to avoid the constraints or expense of a paid tour, and provides the audio tours to go with them! His historical/ cultural info is good, and tips for getting around efficiently and safely, are great! One tour he actually recommended in Barcelona by name, (I’d never seen that before in one of his books), was The highlight of the trip, and I wouldn’t have known it existed but for his book! My husband loves that he can read/ reread his books on his Kindle..I like keeping it small and light by reading on my iPhone Kindle app!
