Well you learn the basics if you have never seen a racket or ball. I went eyes wide open when I bought this book as a gag-gift for a really good racquetball player.

Waste of money. Bought to teach my kids the right way to play the game. No good instructions on the court, the lines, the rules of serve or play. I had better instructions from the racquet packaging I bought for the kids.

This book is NOT worth the money. I could have put this together in just a couple of hours with just a little internet research.

This comic takes place after New Hope and the Death Star has been blown up by Luke Skywalker. On Coruscant their best spy Eneb Ray is asked to help a group of Senators escape from the prison Arrth-Eno. They have access codes and a ship willing to smuggle them off of Coruscant. He agrees to help. When he arrives the Senators tell him they have a rare opportunity to kill the Emperor as he is coming to Arrth-Eno. Ray contacts Leia and she has the six spies on Coruscant come to his aid as well as the spy on Arrth-Eno itself. But things go wrong and the Emperor had laid a trap for them and blows up Arrth-Eno killing everyone on board. Ray was last seen going after the Emperor's ship.Cut to now where Leia has teamed up with Sana to capture Dr. Alphra. They then head out to a maxim security prison, Sunspot Prison, to place her there. The place has a sun at its back and is heavily fortified at its front. No one knows about the place either. But then a mysterious man and his droid army invade the prison and begin to kill the prisoners. Leia cannot stand for this and is determined to save them. He is equally determined to get her to kill them.Leia and Sana will unlock Dr. Alphra's cell and make the decision to trust her enough to help them try to take back the prison. Meanwhile, Han and Luke are on a mission to get supplies for the Rebels and Han loses all the money on a sabacc game and must find a way to earn it back. This is a powerful comic that explores the dark side of humanity and how a monster can be created. While Leia is looking to save everyone Sana is looking to save only them, which is typical of both of them. Sana and Dr. Alphra have some kind of history together that didn't end well so those two are at each other's throats. The character of Eneb Ray is a good and honorable man--a hero--who believes in the cause fully. Will Leia and Sana be able to save the prisoners and make sure Dr. Alphra doesn't escape? I really liked this book that found a way to insert some humor into a very dark storyline. I give it my highest recommendation.

Star Wars: Rebel Jail is the continuation of Marvel’s Star Wars and the new Disney Canon. While I loved everything so far from the series this volume is not my favorite. It’s still a decent read with a Han, Luke bromance in it. Leia being challenged on if she’s going far enough in this war and a cool new Rebel Prison by a star. It also had things I didn’t like the Art isn’t as good as the other volumes and a Lover’s quarrel subplot between Sana and Aphra. It also had a Old Man Kenobi story from the Journal which I liked but it was out of place. It's more suited to it's own comic series not to be lumped in with this one. The writing doesn’t flow as well as the other issues. It’s still a not a bad read. I enjoyed it. I like the OT Trilogy characters I like the some of the new characters like Doctor Aphra. Still worth a read especially if you are a big fan of Star Wars adds cool new location and lore to this Disney Canon.

“Rebel Jail” continues the fantastic Luke Skywalker series of graphic novels. As with “Skywalker Strikes" (vol.1) and “Showdown on the Smuggler's Moon” (vol.2), the third installment takes place between “A New Hope” and “The Empire Strikes Back.” The book introduces an exciting new character. Fans of spy fiction will adore Eneb Ray, because he is a rebel spy in the likeness of James Bond. It’s deeply satisfying to see the spy genre worked into the Star Wars universe. The Dr. Aphra plot line that threads through the Darth Vader series (which is highly recommended) works its way into “Rebel Jail.” In addition to the regular trilogy characters (R2-D2, C-3PO, the Emperor, etc.), Sana Starros continues as a welcome part of the new cast. In Han and Luke’s adventure, we get to witness the event that inspired Leia to eventually refer to Han as a “nerf herder.” Speaking of Princess Leia, she plays a large role in the book. Near the end, a new and frightening character is introduced: a lightsaber wielding stormtrooper! Earlier in the series, Luke Skywalker obtained Obi-Wan Kenobi’s Tatooine Journal. The final chapter of the graphic novel is an excerpt of the continuing story of how Kenobi kept Luke safe when living at the Lars homestead. In it, we get to see Luke fly his T-16 skyhopper in Beggar’s Canyon. In “Rebel Jail,” the writing is good and the artwork is beautiful. There’s tons of action, yet lots of background info that helps to flush out the classic trilogy characters. Keeping with this generation of Marvel Star Wars graphic novels, story arcs and characters are deliciously intertwined. So while the individual series work independently of each other, it is deeply satisfying to read them concurrently since there is so much entanglement. “Rebel Jail” is a fantastic continuation of the Luke Skywalker series.

This volume is pretty thick. There are additional stories before and after the ongoing Star Wars series. Annual 1 starts out this volume.It is a story of a Rebel spy trying to take out the Emperor himself. The volume ends with another Kenobi story. Young Biggs and Luke appear. And the origin of Black Krrsantan's scar.I really enjoyed learning about Sana and Aphra's history together. and Nerf herding reference!The stinger at the end is great!I give this whole volume a 4/5, but I give the Annual 1 that starts it out a 5/5. it's a great continuation in the Star Wars ongoing comic, but nothing too special.

These books are very well written. I've read each one and could hardly put it down, anxious to start the next. Karina went through so much but in her journey she reached out and found a God who loves her . She still goes through so much,but God is with her. There are many twists throughout her journey which definitely keeps the reader glued to the page wondering what will happen next. The author was amazing with detail and story telling. But at its heart this is a fifteen year old girl's story. It's full of her life with friends, boys and school dances. Sleepovers with her bestie and Friday night football games. Best book I've read all year !

Being a teen is hard enough all by itself. Having a mom who deals drugs and forces you to live a lie is way tougher. Karina had become accustomed to this way of life in spite of all the craziness her mother brought to the table, but then the rug was pulled out from under her and everything changed. I'd read the prequel prior to book one prior to all the books being in a box set. It's nice having insight to the back story, but it's not a must to enjoy the story. If you've ever watched the TV show 'The Fosters', this story has that type of feel to it but on a Christian level. Fast paced, lots of drama and something is always happening.

Patricia Bell brings up topics that are so close to heart...child abuse and human trafficking. I love how she expresses the pain and difficulty that young people (and adults) feel when trying to recover and heal. It is hard to trust in God when one has experienced such trauma. Unfortunately, so many never get to experience the godly homes that Karina and Melissa did in these books.

I read each of these books separately and loved them all! I love when people come from such a hard life and actually find a real family. In the mean time, they come to know Jesus and that is the best thing of all. I like that not only do we see Karina's journey through all that happens to her, but we get to know more about some other people that are in her life, too. These books were my first exposure to Patricia's writing and I've been hokked ever since. Very well done!

The fist story, From House to Home, is not just a cute story with some romance in it, but it's one with depth and real life situations.I started reading it and wanted to just read all day to find out what happened.This first story will have you on the edge of your seat.

I loved the books, I ordered the first one and couldn't wait for the second one to get here, the story is so real to life and easy to read. Patricia told how the things were in the real world and said them very well. I now want to order the rest of her books

Black Elk Speaks is the story of the Lakota visionary and healer Nicholas Black Elk (1863–1950) and his people during the momentous twilight years of the nineteenth century. This is by far the best book I have read so far, from all of the Native American books on Amazon. It is also the best of quality of the books I have received, even though it's soft bound. You will take a historical adventure with Black Elk at your side to the Little Big Horn and to Wounded Knee. This book was written from the transcripts of the original author who lived with Black Elk while writing it. The book was translated by Black Elk's son who was fluent in English and in the Sioux language. There are footnotes throughout by a reviewing author that tells of when the author strays from the original transcripts. I think they could have been left out or put at the end of the book. I would read the entire chapter, then go back and read the footnotes, as there are so many that they kind of get in the way. At times though, I must admit they help out. This is a real life Native American history as told by one who lived it. His vision, is probably one of the most important lessons in all of Native American history and belief systems. I truly think this is one of the best books that I have read so far, and intend to read it again. It makes me sorry to read of our military efforts to exterminate our Native Americans and our government treaties that were broken. We are truly blessed by our Native American spirituality, history and wisdom. I can only pray that we work together on this earth and honor our words in the future.

Having read Black Elk Speaks decades ago, and loving it, I wanted to upgrade to this “premier edition” with photos, art work, appendices etc. I was horribly disappointed to realize as I was reading along, that 33 pages are missing in the center of the book! Once you reach page 98, the text reverts back to page 67 and repeats the next 31 pages. When you reach page 98...again....it skips to page 131! Pages 99 through page 130 are missing. I am so disappointed. If you are planning on ordering this edition, ask the seller to verify that their copy does not share this defect. I don’t know if it was just my copy, or if the entire printing run was affected. It should have been caught by the seller before listing it, in my opinion.

Well written. Keeps your attention. Fascinating and true story written by a man who was getting a first hand account of an historic event that he actually lived through. Priceless history from the American Indian position.

There are few words I can say, so stricken, my heart, from this book. The voice of Black Elk is clear. His telling of his vision has inspired me in so many aspects of my own life- that a vision must be stepped into even ritualistically at first to gain power from the vision itself. How many ways can that be applied to my own life?? Deep love for him.

Hear it directly from the author who lived it and wrote it, Black Elk. The United States has a very poor history in terms of its relationships with Indian tribes and its willingness to honor agreements. It was a period of great greed for land and a saga of eliminating Indian tribes. Black Foot relates how the white settlers invaded the Lakota's land and literally stole it right out from under them. The white man killed off the buffalo herds for mainly sport, and deprived the Lakota's from their primary life line in terms of food, skins, etc. He speaks of how the White Man killed off his culture making the Indians more and more dependent upon what the White Man was willing to give the Indians. He speaks of the Indian victory at Little Big Horn, better known as Custer's Last Stand, and then the unpardonable American slaughter of Lakota men, women and children at Wounded Knee.The United State's cruel and inhumane treatment of the American Indians is best told in this book. Read it and do all you can in your power to never allow a travesty of this description befall any other people on earth.

This is an authentic recollection, taken down in 1930 by a professor/anthropologist, of a Sioux medicine man and warrior's life, an Indian who was present at both the defeat of General Custer (1876) and the massacre of Sioux women and children at Wounded Knee in 1890. The speaker,Black Elk, tells with great poignancy his early visions as a youth that propelled him to be a healer; of the betrayal of his Sioux people by the whites when gold was discovered in the Black Hills of Dakota territory; of the "rubbing out of Long Hair" ( the defeat of Custer), of Black Elk's travels in Europe as a performer in Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show; and finally of his return to the frontier to witness and fight against US soldiers at Wounded Knee. He also recounts the assassinations of Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull by the Reservation police.This is a book that should be on the reading list of every US high school's American History class. It is a rare insight into the broken treaties and the final betrayal, incarceration and placing on reservations of the proud, independent Sioux nation. It is the end of the frontier and the end of a way of life. Sadly, it is also a curtain raiser to the same kind of atrocities, little known, that US forces committed against Filipinos in the first years of the 1900's; and it leads to My Lai in Vietnam, and Abu Gharib in Iraq. It is another reminder that war and colonization is hell, and that commanders cannot be counted on to restrain their men, and that the casualties of conquest are more often civilians than soldiers.The real sadness of this book, however, is Black Elk's measured but ultimately tragic telling of the death of the Sioux way of life in the final decades of the 1800's, of the breaking of their spirit, and the perishing of their magical, nomadic culture at the hands of "Western progress."

Kiini Ibura Salaam's fiction has been included in such publications as Dark Matter, Mojo: Conjure Stories, and Dark Eros. One of her earlier (and most distinctive) stories, ''Of Wings, Nectar, and Ancestors,'' was translated into Polish, and two of her short stories, ''Desire'' and ''Rosamojo,'' were praised in Publishers Weekly. It is a book written within a lived experience for others of that lived experience. It reminds me, in that sense, of Constance Burris’ BLACK BEAUTY.2All philosophizing aside, this book is full of characters of color. And women. And it has some queer representation.REVIEW:Salaam is a lovely, poetic writer. From her language choice to the actual structure of the stories themselves, most of the stories in this collection are lyrical and haunting.One of the clearest themes throughout all the stories is sex, which in virtually all cases3 is a powerfully positive and healing force in women’s lives. In stories like “Desire” and the trio of stories featuring the unnamed alien race represented by WaLiLa and MalKai who feast on human nectar (that is drawn out by way of sex), sex and sexuality is arguably coerced--but still, the power of it and the emotional connection it brings proves healing. Or at the very least complicated. The women in the stories remain agentic throughout even when used as vessels.But I was more drawn to some of the other themes woven through the stories.4 Movement-as-freedom and movement-as-communication comes up again and again. Most clearly in the WaLiLa and MalKai stories, where WaLiLa and MalKai must learn to forsake their original language of movement/dance for spoken human languages, and again in “Battle Royale.” In “Battle Royale”, the narrator’s insistence on engaging in the flashing game/dance of razors leads to the fever-dream punishment meted out by his grandfather. But movement, or the lack of it, and how it can bring a different kind of freedom comes up in “Debris”, too.There is an openness in Salaam’s resolutions that I enjoyed. Many of the stories were about a change of direction, a decision point, and were other writers would tell you where the characters were going, Salaam refuses to reveal what happens next. The conflict was that there was a decision to make, she seems to suggest. The trick of her stories is that there emotional gratification in knowing that a decision was made, but we don’t know which path was taken.Salaam’s stories are fascinating. In particular, I liked “Debris”, “Ferret”, and “Ancient, Ancient”. “Rosamojo” was hard for me to read--I found it triggering--but it is a very good story._____1: I need to write this post already about My Issues With The Word Diversity.2: Although, if you’re into short speculative fiction featuring Black characters you should really check out BLACK BEAUTY, too.3: The exception to this is “Rosamojo”. It is a very good story, but if you are triggered by sexual assault, especially as a survivor of childhood trauma, tread with caution.4: I’m ace, man, I’m not getting the same sex-as-rapture thing these characters are getting.

I love short stories and Salaam's collection was wonderfully different. I didn't know what I was getting into, but I was quickly caught up in her various worlds.Desire: The opening story took me straight to Africa and warring, ancient gods and a woman who rediscovers her sexuality after years of marriage and children. I felt for all the characters, mortal and immortal. One of my equal second favourites.The next three stories (Of Wings, Nectar and Ancestors, MalKai's Last Seduction and At Life's Limits) are about WaLiLa and her group, and they are strange and wonderful. I don't want to say too much and spoil the magic of these three. But I tell you, I found my body swaying after the last story to invisible music and my feet tapping.I've read Rosamojo before and it makes me alternately mad and sad every time I read it. I want to wrap my arms around her, but she doesn't need me. She's strong.Battle Royale and Ferret both perplexed and intrigued me.K-USH: The Legend of the Last Wero was my other equal second favourite of the collection. I would like to read more about these people.Marie was fantastic, a story about a woman rediscovering herself and her culture. I cheered for her.The final story, Pod Rendevous, blew me away. Loved it. Again, I would like to read more about this culture.So much of this collection was about metamorphosis, either just about to happen or in the thick of it. This is a beautifully realised collection that will open your eyes and your mind.

I bought this book after finding out it was a co-winner of the 2012 James Tiptree, Jr. Award. As one might expect from this award the book is a powerful commentary on gender relations but also well-crafted fiction.However if one is a casual reader of science fiction, fantasy, or horror this type of book may be quite frustrating for you. You cannot read it quickly, you cannot read it casually, you must engage with each story one at a time, you must roll the ideas and images in your head for a while to understand and appreciate them.Salaam's work goes beyond gender discussion into race issues, family dynamics, personal conflicts, and the a multitude of possible futures, pasts, and alternatives. None of her characters -- female or male -- are perfect or straightforward. If you can handle that then this book may be well worth your effort. For teachers out there this would be a very powerful book to include in a contemporary literature, gender studies, or race studies course but you will have to devote a few weeks to it to fully get students through it and to help them wrestle with the concepts.

Salaam's a true master of the craft; I read her to learn as much as to enjoy. Her plots are delicately constructed, but I think of them in jeweler's terms. They are the setting for the gems that are her scenes that ooze passion, emotion, and sensuality. With clever formatting, she achieves cinematic intercut scenes, modulates the voice of characters to let us see them from the inside, and shows the scene from such different perspectives, your head spin if it wasn't all so enthralling.People who know my work should note, Salaam writes with an unabashed sexuality. If you prefer my LDS chick lit, this is *definitely* different. Be ready to check preconceptions and inhibitions at the door. In Salaam's world, the depths of one man's shame are as expansive as our universe and the fall of an angel from a religion older than time evokes a soft pain washed away by morning. A former student of Octavia Butler and Nalo Hopkinson, Kiini Ibura Salaam takes the genre in new and mind blowing directions.

Nine hundred miles long, the range climbs to nearly 11,000 feet and contains several canyons deeper than the Grand Canyon. Grant points out that the land is home to Indians, drug smugglers, bandits, Mormons, and opium farmers. Fifteen years ago, he explored this land, where he was chased by cocaine-fueled Mexican hillbillies seeking to kill him. He visited a folk healer hoping to cure his insomnia and was told to take rattlesnake pills, and he attended strange religious rituals. Grant also consorted with cocaine-snorting cops, taught English to Guarijio Indians, and hunted for an outlaw’s buried treasure. “I never want to set foot in the Sierra Madre again,” he writes. “I was out of courage, out of patience, out of compassion.” It was an arduous trip for Grant, but readers will be glad that he took it. --George Cohen

Unfortunate title will prevent many people from purchasing and reading this book. The book provides excellent background information to explain why the war on drugs seems to get no where despite the billions of dollars thrown at it. I appreciated the historical information about others who have explored this area and its people and how drugs have changed it, and also the honest questioning by the author about why he was doing this journey at all (like why do people go to North Korea?). I would like to recommend it to friends, but again, I know the title would not appeal to them. Hope you will rethink the place this book could have in the discussion about the US relationship with Mexico and the complications of the drug industry, and rebrand it.

I have become a huge Richard Grant fan and have read his books on Africa, Mississippi, American Nomads.. and this one. Grant is a good writer and an observant, honest journalist. He describes his experiences in a readable and entertaining way and always puts them in an historical context. He really does make the history come alive and for this alone I am indebted to Grant All books I have read have a common theme. He launches himself into adventure with a minimum of planning and a maximum of faith and most of all a sense of adventure. But he lacks the gigantic ego and self-aggrandizement that one might expect from this kind of book. He is actually more interested in talking to people and getting an honest take on the culture he is experiencing. He is a very different writer than Hunter S Thompson but he reminds me of him. A large part of each book consists of him drinking or doing drugs with locals. That is one way he makes friends and gets beyond the surface of the culture. Having said all this, God’s Middle Finger was the book I found the least interesting. It had the most personal danger for the author but the Sierra Madre culture stayed pretty impenetrable to me and not one I wanted to learn more about. There was one trek after another but I didn’t get the same sense of curiosity about place and culture that I did about say Africa or Mississippi. Still he is a very good writer and anything he writes is worth reading.

My thirty-something son recommended this book to me and, at least at first, I really found it fascinating. Why someone, especially an English, from England, someone would want to go into one of the most lawless sections of North America was one of the main reasons I wanted to read it. And the author explains that very well while he is giving background stories of the area and famous people who populated it.His adventures are true modern day great stories of wonderful people trapped into growing and selling marijuana and being surrounding by very, VERY bad guys who will get too drunk with alcohol, too high from drugs and too ego-stung with power so will shoot you with little provocation just to feed the trigger finger.Like the author, Itoward the end, grew tired of the macho male attitude and was glad to get out when he did.

This story is funny and terrifying. Who knew the evil that exists in the Sierra Madre? Drugs are destroying our country, but have decimated Mexico. Grant is a proficient writer who must be a little nuts to go there in the first place. He took us so we don't have to go.

A good scary read about Mexico 10 years ago.Am a big Copper Canyon fan and a lot of this centers in the region.Liked it so much, bought a second used copy for my cousin.He had several DEA friends at one time and said that Grant's writing reminded him of their "war stories".

Grant's harrowing tale of traveling the Sierra Madre is educational, exciting and fun.The big flaw is that he obviously gets bored by the last of his travel because no one will engage with him.I was disappointed that He skims over places he previously talked up. He avoided Sinaloa, after the first and only time he is treated disrespectfully.He apparently attends a religious ceremony with a Shaman and gives no detail.Even with the flaws, it was a really fun read.

Hilarious and profane. This book is chapter after chapter of what would generally be, out of anyone else's mouth, the world's greatest bar stories. Richard Grant has a knack for storytelling, though he's lucky to be alive after this one.

I liked the author's sense of humor, and his descriptive language.I will recommend this book to anyone who appreciates history, social studies, and going on a fantastic journey without leaving their home!I will read anything this author has published.
