This succinct, well-written book tells the story of the settlement of Jamestown more than a dozen years before the Mayflower landed in Plymouth. It provides an excellent summary of events in England that led to the establishment of the colony as well as the trials and tribulations of the settlers in Virginia. It paints vivid portraits of both the men and women who risked their lives to make their homes in Jamestown and of the Native Americans who inhabited the region at that time. This is a great read from start to finish. Highly recommended for anyone interested in colonial American history.

After a slow start, this is an interesting quick take on the history of Britain’s early settlement in Virginia. Mind you, the author tends to jump forward and backward in time, leading to some confusion, unless one reads it a little more slowly than is common for fiction.Still, I did respect the author’s inclusion of the Indian’s point of view regarding Pocahontas.BOTTOM LINEFour stars out of five.I am striving to produce reviews that help you find books that you want, or avoid books that you wish to avoid. An excellent fast read on the very beginning if our country. Visiting Jamestown and Williamsburg should be required of all who are interested in our roots. My family and I have been there several times. I remember walking a small path down to the water and realizing it was where the first inhabitants of our country walked — our ancestors. I loved reading the details of how it all began. Some of it was tough reading, but it happened. Ya gotta read it!

This was much more than I expected. I enjoyed reading some of the origins of our self-government experiment. I wish there was a little more on the survivors of the early years, because it really seems a miracle that any survived. The information presented was well written and easy to understand.

This is a fascinating history of the founding of the American colonies by Britain. It is concise but complete enough for the feel of the trials endured by both the colonists and the Native Americans. It is amazing that they survived.

I read this to give me more insight into the founding of our country. This book details the many attempts and trials faced by the early English settlers in the early southern colonies. Helps clarify the conflict between the Native Americans and the English claims to the same lands.

A basic rundown of Jamestown and it's historical beginnings. Easy to read with many facts that explain how and why Jamestown was founded, and it's people. I enjoyed this book a great deal and would recommend it to anyone who is interested in early America.

It tells of the hardships faced by the early arrivals to Jamestown. I is a wonder that it survived! I chose to read it because I had some early relatives that were there. Glad they did survive, because I may not have been born!!
